Day 39: Carl G Washburn State Park to Newport

After chatting a while with Dune, the North Van guy cycling south, we started the days ride. We rode until Yachats where we found a good looking cafe with a lot of healthier and vegetarian options. The whole town had a public wireless signal, so we brought in our computers and ate breakfast.

We returned to riding along the coast today. The ride was will filled with headwinds, and the roads seemed to be crumbling as the traffic also picked up, making for less than pleasant riding conditions – however as there was still a shoulder it wasn’t too bad. We made a quick stop at Seal Rock to look for seals, but didn’t see any.

Our plan was to ride to the campground past Newport but the heavy traffic and extreme headwinds were enough of a deterrent for us, so we decided to stay in the town instead. As we were standing on the corner, a man on a bike came over to us chat. We found out he was the shop owner of the bike shop that we had just read about – which received an award as the ‘best bike shop in the US’ from Adventure Cycling. He invited us to go to and maybe talk at a cafe that evening since there was a bunch of kids reading poetry about bicycles. However the event was currently starting and by the time we would be ready to leave we weren’t sure if he would still be going on. Instead we watched the Goonies to prepare for Astoria.
